The Fallen

Wilting Red Poppies

Wilting Red Poppies

The opening ceremony of the XXX 2012 Summer Olympics in London rocked! The ceremony was over 4 hours long. I was impressed because the opening incorporated history. I loved it! The commercials also rocked and were very inspiring. It was awesome that women were a highlight in the ceremony. The opening featured some history of Women’s Suffrage, and the women carried signs reading “right to vote.” This year was the first year that many countries allowed their women to participate. This year also marked the first time that women outnumbered men on Team USA! Nice… The opening ceremony moved me to write a poem about a red poppy. According to what I watched tonight, the poppy is a well know symbol of “the fallen” in the UK.

~The Fallen~

Once tough but soft
the strong grow weak.
Now petals bruised so
cease to seek.

The rain will travel
through your core.
Firm ground is lost
to myth and lore.

Fallen one your
red steady fades.
The wilt remains
in many shades.

Strength in roots
you need to pull.
If the strong survive,
what’s left of fools?

The fallen tilts~ kiss
hallowed ground.
Each petal dies
without one sound.

Great poem Felicia. I too was inspired by the opening ceremonies. I feel that it sort of got a so-so review, but I found it really creative….until the modern technology thing, that just didn’t do it for me. Loved seeing how they built the industrial revolution though.
