The deadlift is one of the most effective exercises for building core strength. Engaging the glutes, abdominals, lower back, hips, legs, arms, and shoulders, the deadlift is a staple of weight training. And the movement and muscles are essential for lifting heavy items from the ground to form a barricade when the zombies are at the door.

Just think of the airplane scene in World War Z. Passengers lifting suitcases and creating an ill-fated wall between first class and the infected coach sections. Then think of the motion of the deadlift and feel your barricade-building abilities grow.

I love deadlifts, as both an exercise and basis for survival skill, particularly when I pair them with box jumps (another personal favorite) to create a power workout.
