Best Compliment Ever: The Day Women Ran Mandrill’s Gym
“I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.”
———— Maya Angelou
It felt so good to walk into the gym today and get the best compliment I think I’ve ever recieved. Genuine compliments are rare and I really appreciate it, especially before I started deadlifting. Mandrill’s women are making gainz!!
When I got there, I walked into the restroom to put my stuff in my locker jamming Knockin’ Doorz Down by PimpC. I was trying to get into the right frame of mind to draw out strength. I saw Heather and waved when I noticed her mouth moving, but I couldn’t hear her. I frequently take my headphones off and tell people “I’m sorry… I can’t hear anything with these on.”
Heather is a woman about my age. She’s beautiful, fit and has great back muscles. She said… “I was just saying that you are such an inspiration to me. I had to tell you that. I see you and you just exude power. Not all women can do that.” I was kind of surprised that someone in better shape than I thought that, so I quickly responded with “even with all this fatness?” I laughed and told her I like to think I have balls. She laughed too.
Heather went on… “No, really. You’re inspiring and above all, power is the most important thing. I’m a fitness instructor and I train many women in leadership roles in the state court system. You don’t see that power in women too often.” Leadership roles ha? I try and keep gym and work life separate since I’m two completely different people. I told her where I worked and made it clear I considered myself a leader there. She said she really wasn’t surprised at all.
She was on her way out and I was on my way in, but before we parted, I told her “that was the best compliment I have ever received.” I went on to straight kill deadlifts with compliments and even thumbs up from my fellow rats. All the while, I was along side another woman who was getting cheered on, my friend Cheryl, who has been straight killing the squats. We are both more than halfway to four plates on each respective lift! I have a friend who is kicking ass in there too and she inspires me!
Here’s to the day that women ran Mandrills Gym!!! This surely isn’t the last!
