So not my Planet

January 10, 2016
image

••Looks like the new Planet Fitness opened in Santa Fe. The peeps on my Planet have been having fun with it. Tonight was spent watching all the colorful rants on YouTube. So funny. I guess beginners need to start somewhere. Maybe offering junk and having ridiculous rules is a way to keep particular peeps on their Planet permanently? A seasoned "lunk" who cared about making any sort of progress would quickly build TRAPS that their Planet couldn't contain.
Thank God for Mandrill's💜 and for meaty TRAPS••

Yes to pizza?
Yes to bagels?
Yes to candy?
Yes to silence?
Yes~on their Planet.
No to tank tops?
No to water jugs?
No to deadlifts?
No to T-bar rows?
No to squat racks?
No to real iron?
Yes~ on their Planet.
Well… that means…
No to any real gains.
So not *MY* planet.

Holly Holm: A Burqueñia Who Knows How to Get It

November 16, 2015

The established champ went down like a little rag doll (I felt kinda sorry for her) during UFC 193 and crowds all over the world went wild!

~Photo of the cover of one of my local newspapers the day of the fight.~

Holly Holm was focused with the intent of taking the women’s Bantamweight title from Ronda Rousey last night. I’ve been a Rousey fan since way back (see all my posts), but I was for the underdog from my home state this time. I had a feeling about the New Mexico native since I saw how much muscle she put on for this fight (check out her thread on my site to see why).

In March of 2014, Holm made the “ABQ’s Fittest People” list in Albuquerque the Magazine. I remember being rather disappointed when I saw her physique in that issue. But after seeing her in interview footage about a month and a half ago, it became clear to me that she was intent on taking that belt. She had really put on muscle!

I’ve been following Holly for a few years now, and have posted about her a good handful of times. I felt so inspired by her in 2012 when I posted video footage of Holly’s training program, which includes her running in the Sandia Mountains. I could feel her heart and drive through that footage. I felt so proud of her last night and got teary eyed when she took that win.

All of Holly’s training paid off. Take that… to all the haters and doubters who saw no chance for her. Her secret weapons in that fight were not only her deadly fists, but her monstrous quads! Much of her super power came from those stems. That woman put in WORK since I saw her spread in Albuquerque Magazine in the first quarter of 2014. It so paid off.

`Watching the fight! Living Room on fyYah!~

We had a big fight party last night. The party was complete with gloves by the TV, beer, good food, and the candles and fire ablaze. Our living room was seriously on straight fire with ravenous cheering as we watched the beat down of a champ in amazement. I don’t think I’ve ever stomped my feet so hard in my life!! Every single second of that fight was awesome.

Holly Holm broke the mold by setting a new standard for women and men in the UFC, champions, and for everyone else. She made international history last night. Most importantly, Holly Holm made New Mexico history. This notable New Mexican made the fight to become champ seem effortless.

(P.S. Now go hit those legs if you want to be as tough as a soon to be 35 year old Burqueña with killer quads! Rousey is 28.)

(P.P.S. Holly’s shoulders, abs, and biceps looked hella tight too. Really doe.)

(P.P.P.S. What did I hit today? LEGS!)

The Rundown

October 28, 2015

Wow!! You haven’t heard from me since Saturday because I’ve been super busy! I’ve been swamped from: the gym; to the printer; to meetings and a hearing and more meetings to come; to homework and school politics; and the completion of my Killer Frost cosplay.

This busy week is far from over. I still have: two all day meetings; an early morning to work magic, become Killer Frost and turn D into The Scarecrow; and a Friday night dinner party at my house! It never gets easier, but it’s all worth it and rewarding when I can breathe!! So what do I have to report?? Hear is the best news from the last four days.

#1 !!!~
On Sunday, I hit my personal best on the dumbbell bench press with two 50 pounders for 12! That means my 1RM for that movement may be 70z!! I love it!! It’s straight comedy to Google pics of women using dumbbells for this (which is why I choose this pic). They are always like 3 to 5 pound weights. Commmee on! Really?

••NOT CUTE••

#2 !!!~
The Tony Hillerman Writers Conference is next week and I completed the program. I met with the printer yesterday and signed off on the proof. Yeayyyyy!! The final looked awesome and I added great quotes from writers this year! I had some resolution issues with Adobe InDesign, but got it all figured out in perfect time. Phew!

••MY 2015 PROGRAM DESIGN••

#3 !!!~
Tonight I put the final stitches into my blue velvet, Killer Frost dress. This cosplay keeps with the trademark icy theme of this super villainess. I attached icicles to the bottom of the dress. Tonight I stitched in the sparkling tulle and silver snowflake cape. Hopefully I can pull this frozen look off. I’m hoping this cosplay comes together just right early Friday morning.

••A HINT OF KILLER FROST••

P.S.
I was HQ in 2013, though I liked Poison Ivy better in 2014. Interesting that this year in the news, Harley Quinn is the Most Popular Halloween Costume Nationally on Google Search. That’s old news to me. This year be like a sea of Harley Quinns. Like Young Jeezy says in his awesome song Me OK“Mister if I’m talkin’ you should listen, game is free OK.” Maybe in 2017 everyone will be Killer Frost?

Two Beasts Visiting Mandrill’s Gym

September 3, 2015

OhhhMaaaGawd!!! I just found out that Dana Linn Bailey and Rob Bailey are coming to train at my gym on either September 13th or 14th from 12-3! I’m so there! I will take the 14th off if I have to! They are on their Flag nor Fail Tour. They only selected one New Mexico gym to make an appearance at and it is Mandrill’s!! Go figure! Even the pros know that Santa Fe runs shit.

image

DLB was the 1st woman to become a professional physique competitor (NPC and IFBB)! She was also the 1st woman to win the physique competition during Ms. Olympia (2013)!! In 2014, she placed 2nd. DBL was on the June 2015 cover of Muscular Development magazine where she was called “The Baddest Bitch in the Gym.” Damn… I thought that was my title?! She made an appearance on American Ninja Warrior this year, but didn’t get that far on the course. She’s still a bad bitch though.

Her husband will be here too! He is also a bodybuilder and photographer who makes music with producer Charlie Hustle. They have mashed-up all genres under the name Ron Bailey and the Hustle Standard from 2012 to 2015. It is all workout music with names like Beast, What I Live For, Run This, I’m Not Done, Go Forever, Plan My Attack, Hold Strong, Hungry, and Never Settle! If you have watched any workout videos, it is highly likely that you have heard this stuff. Beast seems to be the most popular.

Anyhow… Can’t wait to get a chance to not only meet these two, but actually watch them lift!! It should be an awesome and exciting experience. Finally… someone worth a hell will be there for a photoshoot!

My Father’s Day Gift!

June 23, 2015

image

On Father’s Day I was talking with my mom and step father when he asked if I had seen the article in the Santa Fe New Mexican by Anne Hillerman. I hadn’t seen the article, so he brought it to me. I said “oh my gosh, you read it and didn’t notice my name!? That’s a photo I took of her!” We all laughed! It was a pleasant surprise to see the photo I took of her next to her article with a credit line with my name. The photo is not actually a headshot, but it was awesome just the same. The online version has the full photo.

An Ad to Attract Crime Writers

June 4, 2015
2015_LiteraryLandscapesAd_BW_Final

~~Ad Designed by Felicia Lujan~~

Today I received the final approval for an advertisement I designed last week. It is scheduled to run in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday. I’m really excited to have been asked to design this particular ad for the 2015 Tony Hillerman Literary Landscapes Series. The ad is for a 2-day workshop titled Crime Writing: Finding Your Inner Sleuth (which we all know I have already found). I’ll be working the workshop on June 19th and 20th in Albuquerque at the South Broadway Cultural Center as part of the Wordharvest/Tony Hillerman Conference staff. The ad went through internal approval, as well as approval by the Cultural Services Department of the City of Albuquerque. When I sent it to the ad rep for the Albuquerque Journal, he said it was “beautimous!” I took that as a compliment being that he has seen so many! It will not look as good halftone, but it will run in a newspaper. I have been doing a lot of design work at night and I love it. I’ll be talking about some of the other projects I have going on soon.

Most of you know that I have been called “The Darkivist” and “The Dark Archivist” at work. This workshop is right up my alley. I have helped with research on several law enforcement investigations over the years. There are going to be 10 amazing speakers during this 2-day writing workshop, but there are two that are going to be very interesting. Detective Mark Manary will talk about being a member of the 118th Street West Mesa Murders Task Force. He has worked with the Albuquerque Police Department for 16 years. These murders mark a very dark time in New Mexico history. The buried remains of 11 women were discovered in 2009 by a woman walking her dog. The remains were discovered on the mesa in Albuquerque. The case is unsolved and the murders are believed to have been committed by a serial killer. Later that day, Dr. Irene Blea will talk about her research for her new book Daughters of the West Mesa. I’m really looking forward to the crime writing workshop.

Work and Mingle Birthday Bash

May 24, 2015

Yesterday I worked the kickoff for the Tony Hillerman Literary Landscape Writer’s Series. We had a celebration in honor of the late Tony Hillerman’s 90th birthday. His daughter, Anne Hillerman said a few words and signed her newest book while we were at the Tony Hillerman Library.

•••George and Felicia and then Angela "Spence" Pacheco, Felicia and Ana Pacheco•••

The party was hosted by veteran radio and TV personality, Larry Ahrens. Ahrens is currently a Producer and Creative Director at Studio 34 Broadcast in Albuquerque. There were about 75 people there to listen and mingle. It was a really good turnout and the flowers growing at the library were beautiful.

I’ve been working with George for years. He and I can sell some books! We make a good team. Ana Pacheco is also a blast to work with. She is a writer and editor with a great personality. This time she brought along her sister who is the First Judicial District Attorney here in Santa Fe. I liked her! Angela “Spence” Pacheco and I really hit it off. I had never met her and she is super nice.

It was awesome visiting with Judith Van Gieson for a long while. My mom introduced me to Van Gieson’s work so many years ago because she had heard her books were about an archivist. The Claire Reynier series contains some of my favorite historical fiction books. Claire Reynier is indeed a fictional archivist and rare book buyer with the Center for Southwest Research (UNM) in Van Gieson’s books.

Cheers to a very successful event. I can’t wait to work a few of the others in this writer’s series. There will be a two day crime writing workshop in Albuquerque with Dr. Irene Blea at the end of June. Her newest book is about the West Mesa murders. Dr. Blea is a very accomplished woman. I’m excited to work that workshop!

Tony Hillerman Literary Landscape Writer’s Series

May 17, 2015

Next Saturday I’ll be working a kickoff for the Tony Hillerman Literary Landscape Writer’s Series. The series kicks off with a birthday celebration in honor of Tony Hillerman’s 90th birthday where Anne Hillerman will sign her newest book, Rock with Wings.

The party will be hosted by Larry Ahrens a Producer and Creative Director at Studio 34 Broadcast in Albuquerque. Ahrens is on The Morning Brew and is well known as a morning show host. He was on KKOB Radio for over 25 years.

There were two stories in the Albuquerque Journal today. There are links below. I was both honored and upset by the photo of Anne Hillerman that the Albuquerque Journal ran today. I took the original photograph and I’m not sure what in the world they did to it?!

I also included a link to a post I put on my site in December of 2014 about this creative photo work I completed for Anne Hillerman. I guess I’m glad they didn’t give me proper credit in this case!! Oh well~ I’m looking forward to working this series though.

The “Felicia Effect”

May 15, 2015

I recently accepted a new position in my agency. I have devoted many years to our mission and I am honored to have the chance to take the position on. It took me time to prepare an application for this one because I never take anything for granted.

I put together a hard bound book with my application and all the supporting documentation which included these outstanding letters of recommendation. The letters were from two people with a Ph.D. (both are authors), a Certified Archivist who is the Administrator of the Nevada State Library and Archives, and the owner of a business for writers.

I had four great letters from some seriously amazing people. I thought it would be great to share them. I appreciaited all of these accomplished professionals taking time out of their busy schedules to do this for me, but the letter from CB McKenzie was really perfect. It spoke so much to how I feel about myself and I appreciate this coming from someone else!

Eventually, hard work and sacrifice pays off.

Ok everyone…Albuquerque ComicCon is coming in a couple of weeks. I’m leaning toward the green, but I’m sending this out to poll. Who should I be? I am going to revamp the cosplay! 2015 is a go!

December 26, 2014

Looks like I’m in again for 2015 with the Hillerman Conference. I just received this email from Jean. I gotta say…it makes me feel good to get a message like this from one of my two smart boss ladies. I like that they appreciate me!

I truly enjoy making a difference in any way I can and being respected as an intellectual. Anne was also really happy with the photos I took of her. I can’t believe I have been working with this conference for 5 years already!! Time passes so fast. I just went back to find my first post about the conference.

Creative Work for a New York Times Bestselling Author

December 20, 2014

Tonight I finished up some photo work for Anne Hillerman. I just emailed off the final shots. I was honored when the award-winning reporter and New York Times bestselling author asked me to take new author photos of her. I prepared the photos for release to HarperCollins Publishersone of the world’s largest publishing companies. HarperCollins is one of the “big five” leading book publishers. It is an honor to be asked to do creative work for the accomplished daughter of New York Times bestselling author, Tony Hillerman.

Anne Hillerman’s newest book is set for release through HarperCollins in May of 2015, and is titled Rock with Wings. I’m sure the new mystery will feature Shiprock, a natural formation on the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico. In Navajo, Tsé Bitʼaʼí means “rock with wings” or “winged rock.”

Giving: My ARMA Chapter Makes a Difference

December 19, 2014
image

••Left to Right- Lorraine, Kelly and Lynn accept a holiday donation from the Northern NM Chapter ARMA President, Cliff. The chapter also received a membership award.••

I am so proud of my Northern New Mexico Chapter of ARMA. They let me select a holiday charity recipient and I selected my friend Lynn Sanchez, the owner of Sojourner’s Advocacy Cafe in Santa Fe. My chapter gave them $500 to help those in need. For 7 years, my friend Lynn has worked to help women and children in need. She is the one person I know who is making a real difference in our community by providing a safe haven, resources, and her heart to others.

Before the presentation of the award, Lynn talked about being moved to help people in 2007. She had met a woman who was in an abusive situation and was actually living in a hole in Taos. She talked about children in need and the number of homeless people who died on the streets of Santa Fe last year. I give Lynn so much credit because she is also spearheading a movement to fight human trafficking. Lynn works actively with local law enforcement and the Attorney General’s Office in these efforts to provide further protection to women and children.

It felt good to know my chapter made a little difference…that my chapter did a good thing…that my chapter cares. During the chapter meeting, Lynn told an ARMA member that she has known me for at least 20 years. She and her husband also own Mandrill’s Gym (my home away from home) and that is where I met her long ago. Since day one, I took a liking to the sweet, knowledgeable, beautiful, woman with red hair. The same member Lynn mentioned that to told me, “it says something about you that you have been in the gym for 20 years.” Hahaaa…yeah…I guess so. That felt kinda good too.  🙂

Batman or Superman?

December 14, 2014

image

I have to wait until 2016 to see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice??? Noooooo!!! The suspense is killing me! I should have camped in Taos for a chance to see two of DC’s most famous super dudes all geared up right here in my state! I am leaning toward Team Batman even though Ben Affleck will really have to work to convince me.

I like Henry Cavill, so if Superman wins I guess I’d be ok with that. Where are the super villains? I need some of those for sure. The Land of Enchantment was the last stop after film crews graced Michigan and Illinois. The movie is sure to be awesome, as production says they dropped at least $13 milly in New Mexico alone!

Oh and yeayyyyy!!! Jason Namakaeha Momoa is playing Aquaman!!!! Be still my beating heart. Ok….I guess Aquaman may be a’ight after all eh!? I seriously need a crazy or toxic, female DC super villainess though!?! Where they at? I guess I can wait for Suicide Squad if it has to be all good. :/
