•The giants bow down to Jack once he takes the crown.•
Today we went to go see “Jack the Giant Slayer.” That movie rocked! I didn’t give it a “B+” like the forever unsatisfied critics. I liked several things about the movie. Second~ the giants looked creepy (intricately creative bone jewelry, sharp/dirty teeth ~n~ all). Third~ it was a good take on the classic fairy tale to have more than one bean stalk. Forth~ I love me a woman or “princess” who wants or needs to step out of her box. Fifth~ the story was captured in an old book. No I did not forget “first” up there.
There was a #1 take away from this version of the tale which I found most important. This was embodied by Jack himself. The deeper message of the story is this… To be a hero and capture the love of another we do not need to have wealth and fame or material things. With heart it is possible to slay metaphoric giants and secure authentic glory.
•Jack passes the story of the giants on to his children.•
Today on a special featuring an interview with Ronda Rousey, someone said…
“No body becomes
a fighter because
they have an easy life.”
Ronda Rousey rocked it out yet again in the 1st round of UFC® 157. She made Liz Carmouche submit with her deadly arm bar. This has become her signature death move!
It was the 1st night for women in the UFC, it was Rousey’s 1st time defending her title, and it was over in the 1st round for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion. Absolutely awesome!!

I can’t wait until Saturday night. On February 23, the world will watch as the 1st women rock the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The main event of UFC® 157 will feature Rousey ~vs~ Carmouche at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Rousey “the trash talker” is the 1st and current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion. She was also a Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion.
I put it all down for Ronda Rousey. She will take Liz Carmouche to the floor with some Judo or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on Saturday night. “Rowdy” Rousey is an American Olympian from Cali. If you look up her pictures you may think this bombshell can’t possibly drop bombs~ but think again! She is straight awesomeness and has won medals for the Olympic and other games (bronze, silver and gold).
Kim Kardashian is lucky she’s pregnant right?! She only heard about the Queen of arm bars talkin’ trash. I don’t think Kimmy would want to feel the Rousey “strikeforce” of the 1st woman signed by the UFC! I’m just sayin’~ Ronda’s awesome…strong women rock!! Don’t let her beauty fool you.
~Cover of my new comic book~ Batman & Poison Ivy~ Her mind controlling pheromones don’t work on him.
Poison Ivy has been my favorite super villainess from DC Comics for a while now. Last weekend I couldn’t resist picking up this new comic book which features Batman (the super hero and Dark Knight) and Poison Ivy (the super villainess with a PhD). Batman may be immune to this toxic woman, but he still played some part in her story. I used a page of the comic book on my security badge for work. Of course it was just a picture of the queen of green~ no Batman.
As a writer, I can’t help but dig that the Poison Ivy character was inspired by a short story written by the great Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864). I learned that last week. Hawthorne is a classic literary hero, but I had never read his short story **Rappaccini’s Daughter.** Tonight I discovered a copy of the story in the Electronic Text Center with the University of Virginia Library. Of course I read it and it is an awesome story! Wow… Just wow… I love Nathaniel and I love that this story inspired the creation of Poison Ivy. Now I see her as a good symbol for me.
Following are a few of the excerpts I found particularly powerful.
…………………………………
“Soon there emerged from under a sculptured portal the figure of a young girl, arrayed with as much richness of taste as the most splendid of the flowers, beautiful as the day, and with a bloom so deep and vivid that one shade more would have been too much. She looked redundant with life, health, and energy; all of which attributes were bound down and compressed, as it were and girdled tensely, in their luxuriance, by her virgin zone.”
…………………………………
“Night was already closing in; oppressive exhalations seemed to proceed from the plants and steal upward past the open window; and Giovanni, closing the lattice, went to his couch and dreamed of a rich flower and beautiful girl. Flower and maiden were different, and yet the same, and fraught with some strange peril in either shape.”
…………………………………
“Approaching the shrub, she threw open her arms, as with a passionate ardor, and drew its branches into an intimate embrace — so intimate that her features were hidden in its leafy bosom and her glistening ringlets all intermingled with the flowers.”
…………………………………
“For many days after this incident the young man avoided the window that looked into Dr. Rappaccini’s garden, as if something ugly and monstrous would have blasted his eyesight had he been betrayed into a glance. He felt conscious of having put himself, to a certain extent, within the influence of an unintelligible power by the communication which he had opened with Beatrice. The wisest course would have been, if his heart were in any real danger, to quit his lodgings and Padua itself at once; the next wiser, to have accustomed himself, as far as possible, to the familiar and daylight view of Beatrice — thus bringing her rigidly and systematically within the limits of ordinary experience. Least of all, while avoiding her sight, ought Giovanni to have remained so near this extraordinary being that the proximity and possibility even of intercourse should give a kind of substance and reality to the wild vagaries which his imagination ran riot continually in producing.”
…………………………………
“He made a step towards the shrub with extended hand; but Beatrice darted forward, uttering a shriek that went through his heart like a dagger. She caught his hand and drew it back with the whole force of her slender figure. Giovanni felt her touch thrilling through his fibres. ‘Touch it not!’ exclaimed she, in a voice of agony. ‘Not for thy life! It is fatal!’
…………………………………
“By all appreciable signs, they loved; they had looked love with eyes that conveyed the holy secret from the depths of one soul into the depths of the other, as if it were too sacred to be whispered by the way; they had even spoken love in those gushes of passion when their spirits darted forth in articulated breath like tongues of long-hidden flame; and yet there had been no seal of lips, no clasp of hands, nor any slightest caress such as love claims and hallows. He had never touched one of the gleaming ringlets of her hair; her garment — so marked was the physical barrier between them — had never been waved against him by a breeze.”
…………………………………
“Farewell, Giovanni! Thy words of hatred are like lead within my heart; but they, too, will fall away as I ascend.”
…………………………………
“Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves. The world’s entire scientific and cultural heritage, published over centuries in books and journals, is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of private corporations.”
~~~Aaron Swartz
Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto (2008)
Frank Kingdom once said that “questions are the creative acts of intelligence.” His words are so powerful. Tonight I was going to post about something else, but when I signed on to the internet, I learned about a tragedy. I am saddened to learn that one of the greatest pioneers of the open movement has paid the ultimate price in his quest for knowledge.
Aaron Swartz the founder of Demand Progress, paid with his life on Friday. The 26 year old was just a baby in the world of technology. He was facing federal charges, close to 40 years in prison, and at least a million dollars in fines for his part in a political movement demanding the freedom of information. In the words of Herodotus,”this is the bitterest pain among men, to have much knowledge but no power.”
The young genius is said to have killed himself, but I can’t help but wonder if that’s true. If information and knowledge is power, how much can you demand before the powers that be make sure you disappear? I used the digital library JSTOR (Journal Storage) just yesterday to write my last post Seduce the Moon. Swartz has hacked that library and some close to him say he was depressed about the decisions he made.
As a hero, Swartz authored the Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto. He didn’t sign the manifesto because he did not believe in the ownership of information. Swartz called it “outrageous” and “unacceptable” that scientific articles are provided “to those at elite universities in the First World, but not to children in the Global South.” If you have never read or do not know of this manifesto, I would encourage you to read it.
The dark haired champion said “we need to take information, wherever it is stored, make our copies and share them with the world. We need to take stuff that’s out of copyright and add it to the archive. We need to buy secret databases and put them on the Web. We need to download scientific journals and upload them to file sharing networks. We need to fight for Guerilla Open Access.”
He has been called a political martyr, a hacktivist, a web genius, a felon, a committed liberator of information, a hero, a distinguished hacker, a pioneer, and an open access guerrilla. Swartz was all of those things~ though I think he was indeed a felon with good intentions. He was more brave than I. May he rest in peace among the 1z and 0z. May his soul reach binary heaven where knowledge is freely available.
•Poison Ivy and Batman (the only super hero immune to her toxins)•
I have enjoyed my online voyage through bits and bytes thus far. It is super sweet that WordPress puts out a handy little report for me to share with my readers/followers. 2012 was a good year on My Voyage Through Time thanks to all of you. I do appreciate every read and visit.
I draw inspiration from everything around me. Sometimes I think I absorb more inspiration than I can successfully handle. “The busiest day of the year was September 18th with 297 views. The most popular post that day was” my poem titled No Death by Kiss. I do need to thank my unwilling inspiration for that spark.
I would also like to thank the top five people who took the time to comment on my site~ Marlene, Sahm, Ela, Kissing the Cockroach, and Perianne. These may just be some of the most contemplative, creative minds I have encountered in the virtual world (with the exception of the real life Mar).
So… Following is the report that the WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared for my site. It’s an interesting look at my backbone!
Here’s an excerpt:
4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 50,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 12 Film Festivals
~My shoe inside a picture of Dwight Howard’s shoe~
Oh my gawd!!! We are in Foot Locker right now and we are trippin’ on the size of Dwight Howard’s shoe! For real! His foot is more than twice my size. Talk about a little person! Now that’s a mind melt. The man with monster gunz also rocks monster feet… Oh~ and I also got my very first pair of Fatbaby Ariats 🙂 at the cowgurl store!
…Game Face… Team USA~ Women’s Heptathlon~ Photograph by Tony Duffy
This week I’m going to have to dig deep to get back on track. My trip to the bay was very educational and was fuel for my mind, but I did fall off my game plan in the gym.
Tomorrow will be my first day back in the real gym for almost two weeks. There was a small gym I was able to hit it in a couple of times last week, still that was a far cry from my usual routine! I need to find my game face again!!
There is one exhibition I could kick myself for not tracking down while I was in Washington, DC. The Smithsonian Institution’s Arts and Industries Building on the National Mall displays some amazing images of women.
Why didn’t I make time to go look for “Game Face?” This exhibit and book poses the question~ “what does a female athlete look like?” The answer is~ they look *awesome! Just imagine them game facing it in a 2,500 square foot exhibition! Nice…
Maybe I can find the book? Well….. after I find my game face again! This may be one of my most favorite sites ever.
Check out Game Face for yourself.
“The exhibition at The Smithsonian shows female athletes doing what they do well: everything. Women and girls featured embody a fierceness that is quickly becoming acceptable to an American audience once unreceptive to, even disgusted by females on the field.”
–The Dallas Morning News
Wow~ what an amazing presentation just made by the inspiring “digital pioneer” Martha Anderson. Ms. Anderson is a powerhouse with the Library of Congress who will be retiring in a few weeks. I am sure she will still be active in my realm because she is so passionate about what she does. In a December 4, 2012 article on a Library of Congress blog, Mike Ashenfelder referred to Ms. Anderson as a woman “who is one of the driving forces behind American Memory,” the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP), the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC), and the National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA). Mr. Ashenfelder is right about this woman having “an effect on most people she comes in contact with,” when you “watch her work a room at a conference.” I plan on writing more about her presentation when I return to New Mexico. Following are a few of her most powerful quotes and a great proverb she noted.
“When spiders unite, they can take down a lion.”
~African Proverb
“Never underestimate a community who is dedicated to a cause, works together, shows support, and learns from one another.”
~Martha Anderson, Library of Congress
“When a bunch of spiders get together, they are seen as a coherent whole.”
~Martha Anderson, Library of Congress
“Metadata is currency. It is touched more than you think and it is a living thing.”
~Martha Anderson, Library of Congress
“There is a lot of stuff endangered while we wait for the perfect access.”
~Martha Anderson, Library of Congress
From left to right: my lil bro Thomas, my grandma Emily, and my brother Brian (retired USAF)
Today I thought about 11s since it is 11.11, but I also took time to think about our veterans. These men and women who are serving and who have served our country are special people. This weekend, my older brother is visiting from Arizona. He recently retired from the United States Air Force. Today I take the time to remember all of the veterans in my family. I also take the time to thank them for my freedom.
Wonder Woman has been a feminist icon since the 1940s. She graces a star-spangled suit, the magical Lasso of Truth, and she is part of the Justice League. Wonder Woman is a symbol of liberation and female empowerment. The most famous inked heroine is indeed the symbolic triple threat. She is strong, smart and beautiful. I know who she would vote for~~ do you?
As if it wasn’t enough that Captain America was here recently to film The Avengers~ word is that the cap will be back to the big NM for a 2nd round (but not with the Scarlet Witch 😦 )
North Carolina, Ohio, California, New Mexico, and Washington DC are some of the places being tossed around as film locations for the Winter Soldier. Some reports say the film ditched North Carolina, but New Mexico does appear to be a go! It seems Washington DC would be a perfect must on the film schedule for Captain America right? I guess we will see what happens?
The Winter Soldier is a sequel to Marvel’s The Avengers, which was played in my home over the weekend at least a handful of times (yes we bought the DVD this weekend). It looks like the first quarter of 2013 may be a good time for the cap to visit the Land of Enchantment!
If you haven’t seen my posts on Captain America, please do~ they remain some of my most popular to date! Just ask the search engine on the right-hand side of my site to see more on my man in action and the symbols I associated with him.
