The idea for this poem was originally drafted as a placeholder within WordPress in 2018, inspired by a SciShow episode. The episode was titled “5 Things Humans Got Really Wrong About Our Bodies.” That night, I drafted the idea to write a poem when I learned about Miasma theory. This is an aged medical theory about air… or “bad air” if you will. Also known as “night air,” Miasma theorists concluded breathing it could lead to the Black Death and other diseases. Tonight… I followed through on the idea and crafted a poem.

noxious fumes
of bad air drift
pushing past
the barrier
real love
floats
false friendship
sinks
into a ghost
of what you were
miasmal dream
a ghastly sight
straight poisonous
and untold
history was made
it’s there to keep
know the night air
will be cold
noxious fumes
of bad air drift
pushing past
the barrier
real love
floats
false friendship
sinks
into a ghost
of what you were

swept by fire
rightly in womb
from cradle
to the grave
spin with heat
core buring hot
with every breath
to save
she’s born of ash
strengh from flame
rising Phoenix
fly for sky
clouds to Earth
and Earth to clouds
each flight has
made her wise
swept by fire
rightly in womb
built to kill
to the crave
spin with heat
core buring up
lit with every
breath to save

I’ll take it stiff
just on the rocks
frozen solid
still on ice
pour me a glass
of shivery dreams
in a steam swept
artic paradise
frost-bound love
glacier of souls
drifting quickly
off to sea
iced memories bleed
droplets of snow
in the complexity
of we

“I don’t really want to become normal, average, standard. I want merely to gain in strength, in the courage to live out my life more fully, enjoy more, experience more. I want to develop even more original and more unconventional traits.”
•Anaïs Nin, The Diary of Anaïs Nin, Vol. 1: 1931-1934

Crossed paths in a new group with a…
Past Poet Laureate of Santa Fe
… I told her the day I met her that I believe in signs. I had set a future goal, rightly aligned, not long before I met her.

tidying up
the fantasy
his hands
know well
her hips
he combs
his mind slow
step by step
as her sweetest
honey drips
smoothing out
the fantasy
his mouth
has savored
flesh
he combs
his mind slow
inch by inch
as this scene
he will refresh

the strand
salted and
tangled up
floats lightly
on thier sea
his lips
they trace her
mermaid spine
on the waves
of he and she
magical
riptide of souls
his fingers
probing her
for cures
moments
she keeps
so sparkly blue
intricate
his lures
there’s nothing
more and nothing
less than his
need to touch
her skin
untangle oceans
swimming deep
to see
just where
they spin
